Shivapuri, renowned for watershed and wildlife, is the second highest hills that surrounds the Kathmandu Valley at an elevation of 2563 meters. The trekking area is partially under the parameters of Shivapuri National Park which is the newest national park in Nepal. It is situated at an elevation of 2563 meters to the north of Kathmandu where lies the famous 'Bagdwar', the origin of the holy river Bagmati.
The hike starts with a 30 minutes drive from Kathmandu to Muhan Pokhari where we reach the entrance gate of Shivapuri watershed and wildlife area. After finishing the necessary formalities, you hike from the southern boundary of the area where the army check-post is located. The trail goes along the rugged but drivable road through pine and cherry forest up to Nangi Gompa within one and half hours, where a nunnery monastery is located. The trail then heads steeply uphill through the oak, rhododendron and bamboo forest for another three hours.
This hike offers an astonishing viewpoint to sight the beauty of snowy Himalayas such as Ganesh Himal, Langtang-Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar, Manaslu and so on. Eventually, the hike ends with a shortcut downhill to Budhanilkantha in about two and half hours before heading back to Kathmandu.
